These are worrying statistics. The removal of legal aid means that family cases where neither party is represented has increased by 30%.
The removal of legal aid for most private law family disputes and the lowering of the financial eligibility criteria have caused injustice to many families in the last two years. As a result of LASPO, 160,000 fewer families cases were funded in 2013-14 compared with the previous year. That meant over 13,000 families per month, all of them in trying circumstances, and many of them including vulnerable people, have not been getting legal help.
