NHS leaders have been warning recently that they will be forced to restrict access to fertility treatment, including IVF, as a money-saving measure. Current NHS guidelines provide that patients should receive three cycles of IVF treatment, but in some areas they are now only being offered one.
Now, the NHS clinical commissioning group for Basildon and Brentwood in Essex has announced that it will stop offering fertility treatment to new patients completely, a decision campaigners have called 'cruel and unethical'. It remains to be seen whether others will follow suit, but making funds available for fertility treatment does not appear to be a priority for the government or the NHS at present.
