It will be interesting to see how the law on same-sex marriage in the US develops over the next few months.

Same-sex marriage is now legal in 27 states and Washington DC, but this can cause confusion and potential issues if the couple married in a certain state move to another state that does not recognise their marriage. For example, they can find themselves having to say they are 'single' for the purposes of their tax returns or have unusual inheritance rules applied to them.

It seems that if the couple separate things can be even more complicated. For example in some cases couples have even been required to both move back to the state where they married in order to get a divorce and settle their financial matters!

Surely this system can't continue much longer in the 21st century.
