My fellow family lawyers and I have groaned at a recent damming comment made by the football commentator, Gary Lineker.
Clearly Mr Lineker has had a bad experience of divorce (at least once), but comments such as these are largely unfounded and unfair. Family lawyers, family mediators and in particular Resolution Family Lawyers aim to resolve matters in an amicable way, with a focus on what is in the best interests of the child and parties.
In many cases I would love there to be a mathematical equation to outline how assets should be divided, but in many others I am glad that such an equation does not exist. The legislation we have puts the needs of children, and the needs of parties as a priority. I am not sure how a maths formula could ever do that?
Speaking to the Radio Times, Mr Lineker said: “Just general speaking, it’s very easy to get married and very difficult to get divorced. And we know that lawyers try to manipulate it to make you spend more money and basically end up hating each other. “I think there should be a mathematical equation that goes straight to the courts and they sort it out.”
