Couples keep a lot of secrets from each other when it comes to their finances, a new survey by financial services provider Prudential suggests.

Eye-catching figures include almost half of respondents saying that they have more income than their partner knows about, and over a third saying that they have more than £50,000 in savings that their partner is unaware of. Many of them said that their main motivation was to keep some money aside for themselves in the event of the relationship coming to an end.

These findings underline the importance of obtaining evidence of your partner's financial position when going through a divorce or relationship breakdown, so that you have all the facts you need to be sure of your position.
