A doctor has been suspended for 9 months following incidents of misconduct at Northampton General Hospital in 2016. In one instance it was found that Dr Abdelkarim Mohamed pulled the covering from a pregnant woman and then conducted an examination which made her scream for him to stop. The Tribunal heard that he conducted the examination "quite forcefully" and a midwife had to intervene and pull his hand back.
Examinations and procedures should always be discussed and conducted with the consent of the patient. Many of the cases which we see are the result of clinicians failing to communicate with their patients, provide them with proper information, and obtain their consent. Failing to do so can not only be extremely distressing for patients, but can also cause the patient to suffer damage which they would otherwise have avoided.
