The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has suspended a midwife following a hearing which brought into question her competence to practice. The NMC found that the 31 errors identified "involved serious breaches of the standards expected of a registered midwife".

The mistakes included a failure to provide appropriately anesthetise a woman who was being stitched and, in another case, failing to properly assess the level of dilation. She was also found to have delayed in checking a placenta to ensure that this was complete; failing to notice and act on an incomplete placenta can lead to risks for the mother, including blood loss and infection.

The errors took place whilst the midwife, Evangelia Kalampoki, was working on the antenatal ward and delivery suite at  East Surrey Hospital, which is run by Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust. The Trust had concerns about her practice and commenced internal monitoring; they then referred her to the NMC after her resignation in June 2016.

Midwives have a crucial role to play in providing care and support during pregnancy and birth. Failings can have very serious consequences for mother and child and women rightly expect that their midwives are competent to practice and will properly support them through childbirth.

NHS Trusts also have a role to play in reviewing, managing and, if necessary, reporting staff where they are lacking in competence or there is a concerning pattern of behaviour, to prevent further errors occurring and to keep their patients safe.
