Following recent publication of the Chambers and Partners and Legal 500 listings for 2020, the Freeths Clinical Negligence teams have again been recognised as experts in their field.

Chambers and Partners and the Legal 500 legal directories produce annual rankings of law firms and practitioners, based upon interviews with clients, barristers and expert witnesses and consideration of recent cases.

Chambers have ranked all three teams at Freeths in the top band for their area.  Legal 500 have also ranked Freeths’ Clinical Negligence teams within Band 1 for the South East and East Midlands. All of the Clinical Negligence partners are also individually ranked as Band 1 practitioners by Chambers.

Between them the Clinical Negligence teams at Freeths cover the length and breadth of England and represent clients in a broad range of cases.

Chambers cites the Oxford office’s expertise in handling catastrophic birth injury claims, as well as sensitive areas such as stillbirth, and delay in diagnosis of cancer cases. The Oxford team has further expertise in fatal claims, including the ability to provide representation at inquests and any subsequent legal proceedings. The team has been praised for its “outstanding” service, with one client describing the team as “professional at all times, knowledgeable, courteous, kind and efficient”, and another client noting that “Freeths provided [them] with excellent service which led to a positive outcome under very difficult circumstances.”

Carolyn Lowe is noted for her knowledge of birth injury and obstetric cases. Chambers quote a source as saying "Her experience and expertise were evident, and it was testament to this that we were able to help deliver justice and hold those responsible to account." Catherine Bell of the Oxford office is also named as an Associate to Watch for her work on complex cases including infant brain injury, surgical negligence and psychiatric harm claims. A source said of her that "She has very good judgement as to the strengths and weaknesses of a claim. She leaves no stone unturned in seeking to maximise the value of her client's case." Carolyn Lowe is also named as a Leading Individual in Legal 500 and Catherine Bell has been recognised as a Rising Star.

Testimonials for the teams in the East Midlands include that “The team is tenacious, meticulous, clearly knowledgeable and willing to help at all times. They are supportive and sympathetic, clear in their explanations and always ready to listen." Areas of expertise include diagnosis delays, surgical errors and product liability.

Jane Williams is recognised in Chambers for her expertise in matters relating to cerebral palsy and misdiagnosis, with one client stating that “her level of commitment is beyond anything [they have] ever encountered before.”  Jane is also named as a Leading individual in the Legal 500 and is noted to be a “market leader and go-to expert in her field”. Further, Paul Balen is ranked as a Senior Statesperson and described as being “extremely knowledgeable, proactive, technically impressive and friendly”. Paul’s extensive experience as a mediator offers another level of expertise within the wider Freeths team.  Gemma Bedford and Adrian Denton are also named as key lawyers by the Legal 500.

Chambers and the Legal 500 both highlight the Derby team’s work representing claimants in relation to a large Maxillofacial Group Action on behalf of patients of Mr Roger Bainton. The team is commended as “extremely efficient, proactive and knowledgeable, [with] plenty of resources to call upon when necessary”, and clients say of Karen Reynolds that she is “extremely personable, warm and relates easily with her clients.”

With each team sharing resources and being closely linked, Freeths’ Clinical Negligence service has again been recognised for its extensive expertise across the country in a wide range of claims and for high levels of client care and commitment.
