No. It really isn’t. If I had a £1 for every time a client or friend had mistakenly believed that living together for a number of years or having a child together meant that they had the same protection as a husband/wife, I would be a wealthy woman!

This week Resolution are running a Cohabitation Awareness week, highlighting the need for law reform to give protection to cohabiting couples. Without reform, the law is complex, expensive and gives limited rights. For example there is no way for pension claims or adult maintenance, potentially leaving one partner significantly financially disadvantaged at end of their relationship.
