A week doesn’t pass without a client commenting that they had thought that mediation is about reconciliation or counselling. That is not right.
Family Mediation is a dispute resolution option enabling parties to resolve the legal (and practical) issues they may be facing following their relationship breakdown. The mediator can give legal information, facilitate discussions and reality test options, remaining impartial throughout this voluntary process.
Attempts at reconciliation and counselling can happen before mediation, or mediation can be stopped to attempt them, but have a very different purpose to mediation. Although mediation hopes to achieve improved communication, this is as part of overall aim rather than to reconcile or as therapy for either party.
