In August 2016, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust commissioned the Royal College of Surgeons to carry out a review of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery service at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. Off the back of this review, the service was suspended so that serious concerns could be investigated further.
Following a second independent review, it was confirmed that there were failings within the service and a group of patients who had come to harm as a result of the treatment they had received were identified.
We now act for a large number of these patients.
Led by Partner Jane Williams, last year we successfully negotiated a Claims Handling Agreement with the Trust’s solicitors the aim of which was to streamline our group of cases in order to achieve early and fair resolutions for those who have suffered. Since then, we have secured our clients interim payments on account of their compensation. This means that our clients have not had to wait until the end of their case and these payments have helped to ease the financial hardship many now face in the current climate.
Progress is now being made to obtain expert evidence in line with the Claims Handling Agreement to enable us to work with the Trust’s solicitors to negotiate final settlements. Jane Williams has commented ‘We are making real progress with these cases. It is good to see that the Claims handling Agreement is working and ensuring that all those patients and their families who suffered harmed receive the compensation they are rightly entitled to, as well as recognition of the very difficult journey they have endured unnecessarily over the last few years.’
We are continuing to take on new cases which have recently come to light and so if you or a loved one have any concerns in relation to treatment that you have received from the Maxillofacial service at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, please contact Jane Williams on 07977446191.
Jane is delighted to have been described in the most recent Legal 500 Directory as ‘exceptional: switched on, always accessible and highly experienced.’ Another member of the Nottingham/Leicester team, Consultant Paul Balen, has been listed in the Legal 500 Hall of Fame.
