Here in the UK, survival rates for ovarian cancer are one of the worst in Europe. Yet, cancer of the ovaries remains one of the most common types of cancer in women. Throughout March, it’s a time to raise awareness of the symptoms and speak out for further funding and research into this type of cancer, helping to improve survival rates and the quality of life for those suffering with the disease.

When women are diagnosed in the early stages of ovarian cancer, they have a 90% chance of surviving for more than five years but this reduces to just 22% when diagnosed in the later stages. Unfortunately the cancer often goes undetected until it has spread within the pelvis and abdomen.

Earlier diagnosis can only happen with a greater level of awareness of the signs and symptoms amongst the public and clinicians.

The most common symptoms of ovarian cancer are:

  • feeling constantly bloated
  • a swollen tummy
  • discomfort in your tummy or pelvic area
  • feeling full quickly when eating, or loss of appetite
  • needing to urinate more often or more urgently than usual

Other symptoms of ovarian cancer can include:

  • persistent indigestion or feeling sick
  • pain during sex
  • a change in your bowel habits
  • back pain
  • feeling tired all the time
  • unintentional weight loss
